PHOTONICS4LIFE gathers the human resources, the infrastructure, the capabilities, the expertise and knowledge of 13 top-research partners in the field of Biophotonics. With its partners it span across the value chain from photonic components to applications and from fundamental to applied research. P4L maps, structures and integrates the research and developments across the subdisciplines of photonics for

analysis of cell processes,

micromanipulation and therapy,

non- and minimally-invasive diagnosis and therapy

point-of-care diagnostics.

It bridges the gap between basic research in physics and chemistry, evaluation of methods by biologists, application oriented development of biophotonic components and systems by engineers and medical or biological research and applications by medical doctors
P4L strengthens Europe‘s position in the emerging filed of Biophotonics not only by its coordinated R&D activities but also through strategic links to industry through its Industrial User Club.

The network is co-ordinated by Prof. Jürgen Popp from IPHT Jena, Germany, by Prof. Gert van Baly from University of Munster, Germany and by Prof. Hugo Thienpont from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Although P4L is driven by academic institutes it will have close links to industry through its industrial user club (IUC). The IUC is the link between P4L and industry to exchange R&D results to jointly start additional activities or novel projects and to create innovations, enhancing the competitiveness of Europe‘s biophotonics related industry. Through the IUC awareness is created of the added value which new developments in biphotonics offer in biomedical and health sciences. In collaboration with industry P4L strongly contributes to solve the biggest global problem of exploiding health care costs by providing means of a non-invasive, affordable and optimized health care.
Companies which become a member of P4L’s industrial user club will get access to all the information on biophotonics and on the expertise and collabortion opportunities in P4L as well as on related methodologies and technologies, continuously gathered by the network and provided through its knowledge management centre. There are two membership possibilities.
